About Us

The world-heritage listed Willandra Lakes Region covers the far south-western corner of New South Wales, and comprises a montage of dried salt water lake beds near the Murray Basin Area. There are nineteen lakes in this area, and Mungo Lake is the central feature. The Willandra Lakes region has an extraordinary natural and cultural past, which has made it a popular destination for geology and history lovers alike! The region’s current semi-arid landscape of grasslands and desert dunes comes as a result of enduring weather and erosion since the ice age.The Willandra Lakes region has an eerie ancestral past too, as the original ancestors were living off the ecosystem in the lakes area as early as 50,000 years ago. The area contains the earliest evidence of human life to exist outside of Africa as well as evidence of the earliest known cremation in the world, dating back 40,000 years. The famous remains of the Mungo lady and the Mungo man were found embedded in sediment in Mungo Lake in 1969 and 1974, respectively. Take a guided walking tour with one of the Aboriginal Discovery rangers, take in the panoramic desert views from the Walls of China viewing platform.
