MINLATON

Minlaton calls itself ‘The Barley Capital of the World’ and for good reason – Yorke Peninsula is said to produce the finest barley in the world owing to the gulfs on each side creating cool conditions and allowing the crops to mature slowly. It’s half an hour away from the east and west coasts of the peninsula, so no matter which way the wind is blowing, you’re close to the perfect fishing spot! Look out for the ‘Red Devil’ flown by pioneer aviator Captain Harry Butler. It’s the last surviving example of a Bristol Monoplane.

FAST FACTS!

  • In 1919, Harry Butler flew the ‘Red Devil’ on the first overwater flight in the Southern Hemisphere – a mail delivery from Adelaide to Minlaton
  • The name Minlaton is derived from a Nharangga word meaning ‘sweet water’
  • The area was settled in the 1870s by farmers who found conditions ideal for growing wheat and barley, and for sheep grazing
  • Minlaton is home to some great local producers including a nationally awarded chocolatier and the peninsula’s only craft brewery
  • Be sure to meet the emus and kangaroos in the native animal reserve. It’s a nice spot for a picnic, especially in spring after the emu chicks have hatched
